Unlike many students, I wasn’t big on going out and getting drunk at first â€" I rarely drank alcohol before starting university, and only went out a few times during freshers’ week (it didn’t help that I’d left my I.D. at home…oops). I was shy and it took me a little while to come out of my shell. I forced myself to socialize more, even going as far as attending a Riding Club social with a friend, despite the fact I don’t own or ride a horse. As I became more confident and outgoing, Halloween â€" the first big theme night of the year â€" approached. The (vaguely) Halloween dress   Although I enjoy Halloween and am a creative person, being shy means I feel uncomfortable in fancy dress and prefer to appreciate other people’s costumes instead of applying zombie makeup and wearing a nurse’s outfit. I’m not ashamed to say this means I’m one of those girls who feels much more comfortable painting whiskers and winged eyeliner on my face and donning a pair of cat ears. The dress I bought for this first Halloween didn’t actually end up getting worn until a Harry Potter-themed social later in the year. It was a black, velvet, metallic-printed strapless dress and one of the first things I bought specifically for going out at university. Annoyingly, it had the habit of poking me in the chest with some of the lining, and slipped down a little bit while I was dancing, although thankfully not too far… *ahem*. Going out-out   Looking back on the many photos from my university experience, there’s a definite change in my outfits for nights out from first year to second year. To start with, the good old jeans and a nice top combo was enough for me, but by second-year I was socializing more and buying new going out clothes for that purpose. I didn’t need a new dress every time I went out, but it was certainly nice to treat myself to one every now and then, especially if it was required for a theme night at the Student Union. For example, one night there was a Little Black Dress social and I didn’t actually have one â€" the perfect excuse to shop. Of course, being a student, I only had a limited amount of money to treat myself with, so I bought my night out dresses from affordable brands, or took advantage of sales. Here are a few of my favorites: The white lace bodycon dress Originally £25 from River Island, this dress was £12.50 in the sale and I got plenty of wear out of it. Its neutral color meant I could wear pretty much any combination of bag and heels with it. I was actually wearing it on the night out in third year when I met my boyfriend, so it now has a sentimental aspect to it. But before we get too soppy… The May Ball dress   While some people aren’t comfortable wearing prom dresses, May Ball gave me the perfect excuse to search for a fancier, more expensive dress. I ended up selecting a gorgeous light blue dress with a sweetheart neckline and silver sequins on the shoulders, leading down to my waist. I loved having my hair curled and felt really pretty in this dress. I still have it and am unsure as to if I should sell it. It’s unlikely that I’ll wear it again (I never go to balls) but I’d be sad to see it go if I sold it. The Date Night dress This is a pretty, ruffled, purple-pink number which served me well for many occasions and remains a staple for date nights and Valentine’s Days. Graduation dress After three years of lectures, seminars, exams, last-minute revision, assignment deadlines and just a few nights out, it was time to graduate. But what to wear for this auspicious occasion? Not wanting to be too casual, I decided on a relatively formal purple dress with a black belt at the waist, and black flat shoes. I wish I’d picked a slightly nicer pair of shoes (most girls go with high heels, but I wasn’t going to risk falling flat on my face on stage at the crucial moment). The dress itself was a good choice, and thanks to my dad I have millions of pictures to look back on from graduation day. It’s also thanks to my dad that I could go to the after-party, as, having moved out of my student flat, he very kindly drove me back from a night out in Aberystwyth to our caravan in mid Wales at 2am. Over the past decades, thousands of elephants have been ruthlessly slaughtered, to the point that both Asian and African elephants are listed on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Estimates for the elephant population in the world at the end of the 19th century were in the millions. According to the last Great Elephant Census taken in 2015, there were 352,271 African savanna elephants living in 18 different countries, down 30 percent since 2007. Those numbers account for about 93 percent of all the savanna elephants in the world. The current rate of elephant population decline is 8 percent per year or about ∠¼40,000 elephants. Before the ban, the country had many state-licensed ivory carving factories and retail shops: evidence indicates that legal trade has ceased. However, illicit trade continues, and specific country-sanctioned legal trade continues in other places. In the fall of 2018, evidence of continued poaching of elephants was found in several parts of Africa.   Elephant poaching is conducted by helicopters, military grade weaponry, and poisoned pumpkins; dozens of wildlife rangers have been killed trying to protect the animals. Tusks are gathered from the killed elephants and exported illegally by African gangs and corrupt officials.   What Can You Do to Help? Although antique ivory (older than 1947) is legal to purchase, buying it still increases the market for fake antiques made on the tusks of newly killed animals, so at the least, make sure what youre buying is indeed antique. Better not to buy it at all.   There are several good charities, like the World Wildlife Foundation, Save the Elephants (African Wildlife Foundation), and the Elephant Sanctuary, which are effectively moving to protect elephants and pushing states to ban and criminalize ivory manufacture and trade. When this happens, any benefit a child might derive from the extra practice and review is negated by the frustration and exhaustion they feel. While accommodations are often used in school to help students with dyslexia complete their work, this is rarely done with homework. Teachers need to be aware that it is easy to overburden and overwhelm a child with dyslexia by expecting the same amount of homework to be completed in the same amount of time as the students without dyslexia.The following are suggestions to share with general education teachers when giving homework: Outline assignments Write the homework assignment on the board early in the day. Rising Action: * When he had gone about 25 miles, he stopped at another inn to rest, have a samovar be heated and for his horses to be fed as well. * Suddenly, a troika drove up to the inn, followed by two soldiers who came to him and asked him who he was, where he came from, where he stayed the night and if he was alone or with a fellow-merchant. * Aksionov found out from the police-officer of the district that the other merchant was found with his throat cut. * The soldiers searched his things and found a blood-stained knife in his bag. * Aksionov was too nervous to answer the police-officer’s questions of why he had the knife in his bag so they assumed that it was guilt and he was taken into their custody and brought to the nearest town to be imprisoned. * Enquiries were done to investigate his character which found him to be a good man but when the trial came on, he was charged with murdering the merchant from Ryazan and robbing him of twenty thousand rubles. * His wife was able to visit him in prison with their children but in the end was also one of the people who suspected him of doing the crime. * Aksionov, feeling that no one believed him, gave up all hope and turned to God and trusted Him with everything. * For 26 years, he lived as a convict in Siberia where his hair became white and his beard grew long, thin and gray. * The prison authorities like him for his meekness and they along with his fellow-prisoners respected him enough to be given the title of â€Å"Grandfather† and â€Å"The Saint†. * One day, a fresh gang of convicts came to the prison and one of them was Makar Semyonich. * After overhearing several conversations, Aksionov was convinced that Semyonich is the man who committed the murder for which he was accused of, causing him to feel anger so great that he longed for vengeance. He prayed and prayed but found no peace from it. * One night, as he was walking about the prison he found out that Semyonich was creating a tunnel with the help of the other prisoners under the shelf by stuffing the earth into their high-boots. * The tunnel was found out by the prison officials and was investigated by the guards and the Governor. All the prisoners who knew would not betray Semyonich for they knew that he would be flogged almost to death. Climax * The Governor, knowing that Aksionov was a just and fair man, turned to him and asked him who dug the hole but Aksionov, even though he wanted revenge against Semyonich, spoke out that it is not his place to speak about the tunnel. Falling Action * That night, Makar, moved by Aksionov’s protection of him, went near him and begged for his forgiveness and revealed the truth to him. * Aksionov forgave Semyonich and while doing so felt his heart grow lighter and the feeling of longing to go home left him. * Makar then told the truth of the murder to the officials but when the order for his release came, Aksionov was already dead.
